ACLUX, the Association of Luxembourg Citizens in Brazil, organized a visit with LuxCitizenship to Rio Negro and Mafra, twin cities straddling the border of Santa Catarina and Paraná states. Nicolau BLEY, a Luxembourgish immigrant who arrived in Brazil around a year before the mass immigration movement, made this region his home. It is claimed that Nicolau BLEY has 15,000 direct descendents, of which thousands likely have the Luxembourgish dual citizenship. LuxCitizenship’s Founder Daniel Atz gave a speech at a municipal theater and toured local installations, including the Mayor’s Office, Police Technology Center, a large art exhibition, greenhouses, the local university and a local financial institution. The purpose of the visit was to make connections for ACLUX in advance of the upcoming visit of Luxembourgish politicians to the region.
